U-Nica's Programs

The mission of U-Nica is to provide economically disadvantaged children in the community of Barrio Riguero with the opportunity for a better future through education.  These programs are how we strive to meet our mission:

Child Sponsorship:

By agreeing to sponsor a child in Barrio Riguero, you will help ensure his/her success in life.  Each sponsor will be connected to one child with the hopes that s/he will continue to sponsor that child for the remainder of her or his schooling. Sponsorship funds of only $20.00 per month are used to cover tuition, classroom materials, books and other associated education costs for a child in Barrio Riguero who otherwise may not be able to attend or remain in school.

A natural and yet intentional outcome of our sponsorship programs is the educational cross cultural exchange between U-Nica sponsors and the people of Nicaragua. Through letters, sponsors and their sponsored children have the opportunity to communicate and learn about each other's lives and cultures.  U-Nica will also keep sponsors up to date about how their sponsored child is doing in school.

U-Nica sponsors include individuals, families and church groups.  Currently, U-Nica sponsors make it possible for 30 children in Barrio Riguero to receive a quality education.

Classroom Sponsorship:

This program works similarly to the Child Sponsorship program except instead of sponsoring an individual child, sponsors help provide money for materials, textbooks and field trips for an entire class of students.  At la Nicaragüita each grade is comprised of just one classroom, so, when you sponsor a classroom you are really sponsoring an entire grade.  Classroom photos and updates will be provided throughout the year.  Of course, there will be opportunities to communicate with your sponsored class.  We are currently seeking sponsorship for the 3 pre-school classrooms (children aged 3, 4, & 5) as well as grades 1, 2, and 3 of the Primary School (children aged 6, 7, & 8).

Livelihood Skills Training:

In January of 2008, the start of the next school year, we are launching an Intensive English Program.  This program is designed for students in grades 4, 5, and 6 of the Primary School (ages 9 - 11) and the entire Secondary School (the equivalent to high school in the U.S.).  As the tourism and service industries grow in Nicaragua and more international companies open up offices in the country, there is an increase in demand for English-speaking employees.  We hope that our Intensive English Program will give la Nicaragüita graduates the necessary skills to compete for these kinds of jobs.

Street Children Sponsorship:

We are currently researching the feasibility of starting special classes at la Nicaragüita for older children who have either never attended school or who have not been in school for years.  These children typically are vendors on the streets, selling things such as tortillas or shining shoes.  This type of a school program would require special classes in order to catch these children up to the same level as their peers.  We hope to launch this program in January 2008 with an initial classroom of 10 students.

Other Programs:

La Nicaragüita was always a small, overcrowded school.  As the number of students attending la Nicaragüita grows due to the successes of U-Nica, there is an imminent need for expansion.  We are currently accepting general donations to help offset the construction costs of a new building designed house the Secondary School.  Stay tuned as we learn more about this exciting expansion!
